Material of D Washer for EZ Lube Spindle

Question:

What type of steel is used for an EZ Lube D spindle washer for an axle rated for 3,500 GVWR? My original spindle washers are worn and easily filed, looking for something that doesn’t wear like this. See pictures.

Thanks for reaching out Kirsten. The D Washer for E-Z Lube Spindles # 5-23 is made from a heavy-duty steel alloy. Unfortunately, the manufacturers of these spindle components don't typically publish the specific grade of steel or specifications such as Rockwell hardness. Although the washers in your photos do appear to have quite a bit of wear, I would not recommend replacing them with a harder washer. The spindle washer is intentionally a relatively inexpensive wear component and you want the washer to wear before the spindle itself or the face of the outer bearing. Using a hardened washer could simply transfer the wear to the spindle or the outer bearing, both of which are considerably more expensive and difficult to replace than a spindle washer.

I'd recommend sticking with the standard # 5-23 D-shaped spindle washer and also trying to determine what caused the excessive scoring on your originals. Possible causes include the spindle nut being overtightened, insufficient lubrication or improper bearing adjustment, or simply a lower-quality original washer that wore prematurely.

Are you seeing damage or scoring on your spindle or outer hub components?

Thanks Christopher! I don't see significant spindle wear, maybe a tad on the treads flush with the flat D side. The old washers have a tiny bit of play and not a perfectly machined fit either. Now I understand that the spindle washers are sacrificial on purpose. With that in mind, does it really matter if the replacement spindle washer OD is bigger or smaller than the original? Meaning, I'm having a really hard time finding the exact replacements, and think I will have to have ones made. Any help is appreciated :)

@KirstenN For a 3,500 lbs axle, the D Washer for E-Z Lube Spindles # 5-23 would be the standard replacement. What were you getting for your inner diameter measurement?

Kirsten, I can't tell you what kind of metal the washer is made from, but I can tell you I've had them on my boat trailer for several years and over 10,000 miles of towing and there is NO sign of wear. Whatever they're made from, it's working.
