Is It Normal for the Roadmaster Exact Center Rubber Boot to Bunch Up?

Updated 09/05/2026 | Published 08/31/2026

Question:

I just had a Roadmaster Exact Center Steering Stabilizer RM47MR installed by your recommended mechanic, Hitch Masters. After only 10 miles of travel, I looked at the stabilizer and observed that the rubber boot was bunched up. Is this typical? I can send a picture.

Hey Arthur, thanks for reaching out. Yes, some bunching or wrinkling of the rubber boot on the Roadmaster Exact Center # RM47MR is normal. The boot is there to protect the stabilizer rod from dirt, water, and road debris, and it has to compress and expand as the steering stabilizer moves in and out. Because of that, it will not always sit perfectly straight or evenly spaced after driving.

What I want to check is whether the boot is simply accordion-folded/bunched up or if it is actually pinched, twisted, torn, or caught against one of the mounting brackets. If it is just compressed, I'm concerned. If it looks pinched or is being pulled hard to one side after only 10 miles, I recommend sending me a picture of the stabilizer as it sits now. I can take a look and tell you if what you are seeing is normal or if the installation needs an adjustment.

There is no way to add pictures to the comments on here, but you are welcome to email pictures to me. My email is [email protected].

What vehicle is your steering stabilizer on?

On each end of the boot is a circle where I placed a zip tie to hold it in place - should be overkill but I don't want the boot to slip and have dirt collect on the rod.

I installed mine on a 2024 Ford E350 motorhome. I had to adjust it a couple times before I was happy with the drive-ability. I can now drive it with one hand on the wheel. I find that trucks still affect me when they pass, but I rarely am pushed onto the berm now.

@RichardH How did you go about making the adjustments?

@RichardS, the 1st and 2nd times, I loosened the jam nuts a twisted the damper about 2 turns. The 3rd time, I marked the steering linkage, loosened the mounting bracket, turned the wheel slightly and tightened and torqued the bracket. I test drove the coach and am happy with the results. I have since driven to Nashville and the UP in Michigan.
