Question:

WE ARE NEEDING TWO 16inch DUALLY WHEELS 8 BOLT WITH 4.88inch CENTER FOR A 2007 BIG TOW TRAILER FOR UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD. THE TIRE SIZE IS ST235/85R16 AND IS LOAD RANGE G 14PLY. THE WHEEL NEEDS TO HOLD 110 LBS OF AIR PRESSURE, AND LOAD CAPACITY OF 3860LBS DUAL LOAD OR 4400LBS SINGLE LOAD. PLEASE ADVISE IF VESPER STEEL DUAL WHEEL MX89FR WILL BE THE CORRECT WHEELS FOR WHAT WE NEED?

Hi Geri, based on the specs you provided, the Vesper Steel Dual Trailer Wheel # MX89FR looks like a good match, with the one thing I would confirm before ordering being the offset of your existing wheels. The # MX89FR is a 16 inch x 6 inch dual wheel with an 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern, a 4.88 inch pilot hole, and a 3,890 lb capacity per wheel. It will also accept your ST235/85R16 tires. The included metal valve stem is suitable for the 110 psi your Load Range G tires require.

The important detail left to verify is the wheel's positive 5.35 inch offset. With a dually setup, that offset is especially important because it determines the spacing between the paired tires and their clearance from the trailer. Even though the bolt pattern, pilot hole, tire size, and capacity line up, I wouldn't want to call it a definite fit until we know your existing wheel uses the same offset.

The easiest place to start is by checking the existing wheel for an offset stamp. Look on the inner side of the wheel, especially around the center or on the back side of the wheel. Offset is commonly identified by the letters ET followed by a number in millimeters. For example, you may see something like ET0, ET30, or ET136.
