Does the Curt Wiring Harness # C56321 Add Amperage to the Factory Wiring on a 2019 Kia Sportage?

Updated 08/18/2026 | Published 08/10/2026

Question:

One question, so you are saying that the new trailer harness bulbs will receive its 12 volt power from the existing factory car harness by unplugging the existing car harness from the socket, then, plug in the new trailer harness into the socket, then plug the existing car harness into the new trailer harness adaptor. If yes, doesnt that new load affect the current amperage? Thank you, Tommy.

Aloha Tommy,

Welcome to etrailer, I'm glad you found us.

You are correct on how the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C56321 plugs into the factory wiring, but there is one important difference when it comes to where the trailer lights actually get their power.

The connections at the factory tail lights are used to tell the converter when you are braking, turning, or turning on the running lights. The # C56321 is a powered converter, so the power used to operate the trailer lights comes from the separate 12V power wire that gets run directly to the vehicle's battery. That's why that battery connection is an important part of the installation.

So even though the T-connector plugs inline with your factory tail light wiring, you aren't putting the additional trailer light load directly onto those factory lighting circuits. The converter uses those circuits for the lighting signals and then uses the dedicated 12V connection to power the trailer lights. This helps protect the vehicle's factory wiring from the additional amperage required by the trailer lights.

If you still need to pair the wiring with a great hitch for your 2019 Kia Sportage, I really like our etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e72TR. It's a Class III hitch with a 2" receiver, and I especially like the matte black finish. It blends in nicely with the vehicle and gives the installation a clean, OEM-style look (see attached image).

What are you planning on towing with your Sportage once you get the hitch and wiring all set up?

I have installed this trailer wiring harness on 2 different Kia Sportage. Has worked reliably with both incandescent and LED trailer lights. No blown fuses, no change in blinker speed.

@Steve Thanks for the response Steve. I always appreciate a good call out, nice to hear that it has 0 issues with the different trailer lights =)
