How to Find Replacement Hubs and Bearings for an Old Trailer
Updated 07/22/2014 | Published 07/20/2014 >
Question:
I am trying to replace the hub and bearings on an old trailer that I just purchased. How do I go about measuring the bearings to make sure I get the correct size? The hub I will need is a 5 bolt 4 1/2.

The best way to measure the bearings is to use a precise measuring tool such as a dial caliper and measure the inner diameter of both bearings. You can also measure the bearing and seal journals on the spindle (see photo). Measuring the grease seal journal is important because some spindles will use the same bearings but different grease seals.
The last piece of information that we will need is the type of hub. If your trailer does not have brakes, then you can use an idler hub. If your trailer has electric or hydraulic drum brakes, then you will want a hub/drum assembly.
