Looking For Heavier Duty Landing Gear System For 2018 Forest River Cherokee 255RR

Updated 07/13/2026 | Published 07/06/2026

Question:

Looking to replace the electric front landing gear with a heavier duty unit. Current gear is very labored when lifting. Also Sheared the bolt off the follow leg side this weekend. Motor is a LCI PN142178 on a 2018 Forest River Cherokee 255RR. What do you recommend?

Hey Jud, thanks for reaching out. If you are looking to upgrade from the current landing gear setup, we do have a heavier duty system you can use. Here is what I recommend:

- Ultra-Fab Deluxe Electric Landing Gear Set - Weld On - 38" Lift - 12,000 lbs # UF17-943010

This system offers a significant increase in lifting capacity over many OEM landing gear setups, making it a great choice if your current jacks are struggling to lift the front of your fifth wheel. If you've already sheared a drive pin, that's often a sign the landing gear is working harder than it should, so stepping up to a heavier-duty system is a good move.

The Ultra-Fab kit features a 12,000-lb lift capacity, 38 inches of total travel, and a high-torque motor that provides smoother, more confident operation when raising and lowering your trailer. It also includes both landing gear legs, the cross shaft, motor, switch, and hardware, giving you a complete replacement rather than just upgrading individual components. Overall, it's a much more robust setup that's better equipped to handle heavier pin weights.

What do you usually haul in your 255RR?

Jesse, Thank you for the recommendation. I am typically loaded at 10,700lbs with 2 seat SXS, water, and standard camping supplies. Plus 2400W solar panels and 400AH 48V batteries.

@JudM Ok gotcha! Yea that's a good amount of weight. I feel like that setup could definitely benefit from a more robust landing gear set.

@JudM That is similar to my weight as well, I’m around 11k dry. I think you’ll be happy with the drastic difference it has made for me.

I recently purchased a pair of these lifts for my 4yr old Forest River 5th wheel. The factory lifts were junk and barely worked some times and didn’t work others. After years of dealing with that junk I finally replaced them. These have been amazing, it’s only been a few months but they are amazing. Installation wasn’t as easy as I had hoped, factory brackets weren’t positioned perfectly so it took some shaving and welding but overall not bad. I also purchased better switches, 30 amp, I didn’t like the toggle that came with it. I also didn’t like the leg pins that were provided, I didn’t feel they would safely keep them secure in transit, so I used the OE spring loaded pins. Use a good grease and fill prior to use. They are quiet, powerful and highly recommend.

These worked well for me on my 38' fifth wheel RV. Solidly constructed and the swap out took approximately an hour with good jacks and concrete blocks for bracing. The motors work well and the design is clean and easy to work with.
