Will RockyMounts BackStage Clear Tailgate on 2025 F-150 With Malone Dual Hitch Adapter

Updated 06/19/2026 | Published 06/15/2026

Question:

I’m planning on purchasing the RockyMounts BackStage Bike rack for 2 bikes…it appears that when the bikes are swung away that the tailgate on my 2025 F150 XLT Powerboost will clear the rack. However, I’m also looking at getting a small trailer such as a Malone MegaSport and a couple of kayaks. This would require an adapter such as the Malone MPG544… My question is: will the MPG544 move the bike rack far enough to the rear to allow the tailgate to be opened with the bikes swung away from the rear of the truck? If not do you have any suggestions?

Hey Dennis! I can't say if it will clear for sure but I can give you dimensions to help determine if it will. Using the furthest hitch pin hole, the Malone 2" Dual Purpose Hitch Receiver # MPG544 will push the bike rack out 12-1/4".

When tilted, the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the cradle on the RockyMounts BackStage # RKY10002 is 15" (measurement D below). Measurement C in the diagram is 15-1/4", so with the Malone adapter it will be sticking up 22-3/4" from the hitch pin hole on your trailer hitch. I would try to measure and mock this up to see where everything will sit compared to your truck.

Where do you typically take your bikes and kayaks?

Robin Thanks for the reply. I’m a little confused; I don’t see a diagram with measurements C and D. The MPG544 has a petty detailed measurement diagram but the bike rack does not. In the meantime I made some measurements that may be helpful: from the hitch pin to top of tailgate=21” (Tailgate lowered) from the top of hitch tube to tailgate=7.5” the last 4” at the top of tailgate is a bumpout of about 2.5” where the tailgate release and the backup camera are located. That is where I made the 7.5” vertical measurement. Looking at the diagram of the MPG544, it would probably clear the tailgate before the bumpout, but once the hitch tube on the bike rack got to the bumpout, it would be very tight, and the distance from the bike rack hitch pin to the riser where the swing out mechanism attaches and the height of that riser would be key. While I was on the site, I noticed a few other similar adapters, in particular the Roadmaster RM83SR. That one only has a 4” rise rather than the 7.5” on the Malone…maybe that would be a better option? Unfortunately the Roadmaster is more expensive…and does not have a detailed measurement diagram. We have been taking our bikes on summer vacation for many years now; since we live in southern Arizona, we prefer to go north to cooler areas…while there we often rent kayaks on lakes and calm rivers, but rentals are expensive and the choice of kayak is limited…and I like to fish so a fishing kayak is on my list.

@DennisG try going to the direct link for this page below without anything after html. It is a tan colored picture from the BackStage dimension chart, you can see the C and D better when enlarged. What is the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the tailgate? You're going to be pushing everything out approximately 27" from the hitch pin hole. That 4" measurement on the Roadmaster # RM83SR is measured the same way as the 7-1/2" on the Malone. I don't have the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to hitch pin hole, but I could get it when I'm back in the office at the warehouse if you need it.

@RobinH Robin I see the diagram now…that clears up my confusion and shows a bit of a misunderstanding. I would not be trying to lower the tailgate using the tilt back feature. The reason I selected this rack was the feature that allows the bike platform (and the bikes) to be swung out from behind the vehicle to the side. This simplify’s the math considerably. Just to clarify the distance from the hitch pin on the truck to the edge of the tailgate is 21 inches, and the maximum height is 7.5 inches. In any case it looks like the Malone adapter will not work…the height measurement from lower hitch pin to the upper hitch pin is 7.5 inches, and allowing for the additional height of the hitch tube (about 1 inch) that makes the total height 8.5 inches which won’t work. So with that said, let’s look at the Roadmaster. Since the upper to lower hitch pin height is 4 inches, plus 1 inch for the hitch tube we have 5 inches which is good. The way I see it if the distance from the rear hitch pin to the front hitch pin on the Roadmaster plus the distance from the hitch pin on the bike rack to the riser is more than 21 inches then we are good. If it’s less than 21 inches then the height of the riser must be less than 2.5 inches. I have a couple of photos that show what I'm talking about with the riser on the bikerack, but can't seem to attach them...hint? Sorry this is such a long thread…you’ve been very helpful and I appreciate it…and thanks Cb for your input.

@DennisG I don't know why I read it that way, perhaps because I was thinking it would for sure clear using the swing away so we must be talking tilt. That thing swings 180º and moves the bikes 67" away from the hitch so I don't see that being a problem clearing the tailgate in any scenario. It should work with the Roadmaster then. We can't put pictures in the comments, you would have to respond to one of those emails with the link to send me pictures.

I bought this so I could be able to put a bike rack on the top receiver and a trailer on the bottom receiver. It is very heavily built and also has set screws to lock the receiver extension into the vehicle hitch as well as locking the bike rack on the top section into the receiver extension. It looks very very solidly. I put a very heavy duty to Saris bicycle rack with 2 e-bikes that weigh 85 pounds each. The rack probably weighs close to 100 pounds and the E bikes weigh about 170 pounds. It also is behind a RV camper which allows the handlebars to clear the camper. I'm not sure about a truck tailgate being able to clear with the extension, but it does a very good job on an RV pushing the bicycle rack over a foot rearward. I have not tried it on a truck tailgate because that's not what I bought it for. It's strictly for the RV.. It's very solidly built and does not rattle whatsoever when you put the set screws to lock it in place.

I bought the Malone Duel Hitch for your exact purpose! Yakima Rack & Roll trailer (two kayaks & a cargo box) and the Thule Classic T2 bike rack. I had mine modified to raise the lower hitch level at a welding manufacturing place! Works great!
