Question:
Hello, I’m looking to flat tow my modified Jeep JK. It has 37” tires. I have blue ox tow bar and patriot brake system. The patriot brake system doesn’t have enough force on the brake pedal to firmly activate the jeeps brakes. Is there another similar system that has a more powerful actuator? Thank you!

Hi Kevin, great question.
It actually sounds more like the Patriot part # BLU37TR may not be getting a solid enough push surface in the Jeep rather than simply lacking braking force. The JK Wranglers are pretty well known for giving portable brake systems trouble because of the seat shape and lower dash layout, especially once they’ve been modified. If the unit shifts even a little or the seat flexes too much, it can’t apply full pressure consistently to the brake pedal. A lot of Wrangler owners end up solving this with the Blue Ox Patriot Seat Stiffener part # BRK2503, which gives the system a much firmer surface to push against and helps eliminate weak braking and reposition errors.
I’d also definitely check the Patriot gain setting before replacing the system. The braking force is adjustable on the controller, and if it’s set too low the Jeep may not feel like it’s braking firmly enough. A lot of times the combination of increasing the gain, removing floor mats, making sure the seat is firmly against the unit, and adding the seat stiffener solves the issue without needing to move to a completely different brake system.
Before replacing anything, I’d want to rule out setup geometry and adjustment first because the Patriot is normally capable of handling a Wrangler when it’s positioned correctly. If you want, maybe send over a quick photo of how it’s sitting against the seat and brake pedal in the Jeep. That would make it much easier to tell whether it’s a setup issue or if stepping up to a permanently installed system would make more sense for your build.
Would you be willing to send over a photo of your setup?

Hi Kevin, I would strongly recommend getting a different system. Patriot did not work for me. Always had fault warnings. I added this Velcro plastic piece last year. Did make a difference no matter what I did to adjust. It actually pushed too hard. I have a motorhome and pull a small truck so I was able to use an air brake system Air Force One. Very nice. My picture system sits in my garage, hoping to sell it someday. Good luck
