Joey, great question because this is one of those details that can make or break how clean and secure your wiring connection ends up.
For the TowSmart part # TS68QR, it’s designed for typical trailer light wiring, which generally falls in the 16 to 18 gauge range, and you can go up to about 14 gauge max before it starts getting too large to fit and clamp properly inside the connector. That lines up with most standard 4-flat trailer wiring setups, which are built around lighter-gauge circuits for lights and signals rather than heavy power loads.
If you try to use anything thicker than 14 gauge, the wires may not seat correctly in the terminals, which can lead to poor contact or the cap not fully locking down. On the other side, using smaller wire like 16 or 18 gauge works perfectly and is actually what most of these kits are intended for.
If you’re not sure what you’ve got, you can usually find the gauge printed right on the wire insulation, or I can help you identify it if you describe what you’re working with.
What kind of trailer wiring project are you working on right now?
