Can T-Fitting Be Added to Main Brake Line When Adding Brakes to Second Axle

Updated 03/23/2026 | Published 03/20/2026

Question:

I currently have Disc brakes installed on the rear wheels on my tandem axle Jet boat trailer, wet weight exceeds 6,000 pounds. I am considering adding a second set of disc brakes to the front axle. I have a Titan surge break actuator rated for 7,500 pounds. My question, is the brake line of adequate size to install a T to come to the front axle or do I have to replace the main brake line to the rear axle and come back to the front. I appreciate the advice.

Hey Jeff! If your current lines are in good shape, you can just add a T-fitting and run lines to the second axle, no need to replace the main line. Your actuator and line size are already designed to handle multiple calipers on a tandem setup like yours.

If the trailer’s older I would consider replacing all the lines while you’re adding the second set of brakes. This will save you from chasing leaks or corrosion later. The Kodiak Hydraulic Brake Line Kit # 20TA-BLKIT comes with everything you need for a clean install.

What kind of boat and trailer do you have? Any big trips coming up this spring?

@JeffM you're welcome! Those Custom Weld boats are no joke when it comes to weight. Adding the second set of disc brakes will make a big difference in stopping confidence, especially at highway speeds.

I have a tandem axle set up brakes work find as long as you properly bleed. I have broken Two brake caliper brackets two different times. Brackets are cast steel, believe vibration is to blame, should be mild steel.
