Hey Ed, thanks for the information. The only 2-1/2" extensions I have are going to be quite a bit longer than 12" but I have two possible solutions.

The Curt Hitch Extension and Reducer for 2-1/2" Trailer Hitches item # C45048 is going to be the best option for a 2-1/2" hitch receiver. It is 24"-34" long and has a 6,000 lbs towing capacity. It can be cutdown to 24" but the only way the towing capacity can be increased to 8,000 lbs is to use a weight distribution hitch.

Please note that the Curt Hitch Extension item # C45048 is also a reducer. It will connect to your 2-1/2" hitch but at the other end will be a 2" receiver. This extender along with any other one will reduce your hitch's tongue and towing capacity by 50%. This shouldn't be an issue with as big of a truck as you have though because the extenders are going to top out first.

I know you wanted to stick with the 2-1/2" receiver, but if you used the Gen-Y Hitch Receiver Hitch Extender for 2" Trailer Hitches item # GY89SR with the 2-1/2" to 2" Reducer Sleeve item # 325-GH-007 you would still have a 10,000 lbs towing capacity assuming your Ram's hitch has at least a 20,000 lbs capacity. If not you would top out at whatever half of your Ram's hitch's towing capacity is.

Do you have the factory hitch or an aftermarket one on your Ram and are you wanting to tow a 5,500 lbs trailer or a 5500 truck? If you have an aftermarket hitch and it's a TorkLift I do have some other options.

You can add this information, along with any other questions you have, where it says Add Comment.
