Adapter for Audi Q7 So it Can Tow Trailer with LED Taillights

Updated 03/09/2026 | Published 03/04/2026

Question:

2012 Audi Q7: I want to use an RV trailer with LED lights, electric brakes. Audi, Porsche, VW, etc of that generation have problems detecting LED trailer low current flow, high resistance I found an expensive module over $200 and an inexpansive $40 adapter 7 pin blade car has OEM 7 pin round. What are my options?

Hey Volker, those are basically your two option. The expensive module or the adapter part # 20142 which does the same thing and costs a lot less. The # 20142 would be what I would go with and it will work great to allow your Audi to tow a trailer with LED taillights. Do you have a brake controller picked out already as well?

This Part#20142 did not work for LED light trailers on my 2016 Porsche Cayenne. I was disappointed. I still have not found a solution. If someone can let me know about the expensive part, I would try that.

The 20142 unit worked for me on my 2015 Audi Q7 (TDI) in that the vehicle would no longer give me the dash alert for trailer bulbs. The trailer lights and brake function worked as expected. I have upgraded the brake / tail lights to LED (similar to PN STL15RB).

The low cost adapter partially reduced the dreaded chime and trailer disconnect warning on my 2018 Silverado towing a 2023 Winnebago trailer with LED lights. What solved the warning and chime sound was using a trimmed Emory nail file and lightly sanding the Silverado copper connection terminals and then firmly inserting the adapter. After making certain the adapter was firm and snug I wrapped it at the Silverado bumper electrical port with a few turns of electrical tape to keep it a tight connection. Additionally I would turn on the truck lights prior to inserting the adaptor so the truck system sensed the trailer lights immediately. No more warning or chime tone after all these procedures. If a few weeks passed since last tow I would refresh the terminals with the Emory as much as possible until shiny copper terminals. Hope this helps!

The 20142 product worked great on my 2023 motorhome for towing my 2021 Ford Escape.

I have used the 20142 unit on my 2015 Mercedes ML350 towing a 2019 Casita. We now over 110k miles and no issues whatsoever. That includes probably 2500 miles of gravel road. Alaska twice and nearly all of US and Canada.
