Can Go Power DC to DC Battery Charger Work with Lithium Batteries

Updated 03/03/2026 | Published 02/27/2026

Question:

I have a Grand Design 337RLS 5th wheeler with a 370 watt solor package being towed by a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 350 HD and am planing to upgrade to a 300AH lithium Battery. I do not want to run additional wiring through my truck for charging and want to use the factory 7 pin hookup. My question is do i need a dc to dc charger in my trailer and if so any suggestions. I have read your article on the Dometic GP95QR charger but it does not look to be ideal for lithium charging. I see Optronics has recently released a charger called the Co27 that is designed to operate through the 7pin and has a designated lithium profile but cannot find any information beyond that price, availability or specs. I know E-Trailer is a Optronics dealer and am wondering if you have any information on that charger or any other suggestions. We do not typically camp without hookups so charging while traveling isn’t that important beyond running our 12 volt refrigerator.

Hey Douglas, the Go Power DC to DC charger part # GP95QR that you referenced does have a lithium battery charging profile so it will work for your application. Since your trailer battery is lithium you will need a charger like this to charge the battery otherwise the voltage of your 12 volt accessory circuit would not high enough to charge the battery.

We do sell Optronics but we don't carry everything they offer. We mainly focus on their trailer lights. If you don't think the Go Power would work for you I can look to see if there's something else that would work better.

Douglas, I purchased the Go Power 10 amp charger to do exactly what you described. It does have lithium charging capabilities. I have wired it into my 5th wheel's electrical system but have yet to test its operation, as the camper is in winter storage. I think it will keep my 460 amp lithium battery topped off without overtaxing the trucks existing factory charge wire. Per the charger specifications, it looks like the most the charger will pull from the truck is 15 amps.

Hey Douglas, As others have replied, the Dometic charger DOES have a lithium battery setting. The charger has a row of dip switches that allow you to configure it for different applications. Eddie Mac

Douglas; I have a 2016 Chevy Silverado. It has a computer controlled "smart" charging system and I'm sure your Chevy does too. In a single battery vehicle charging system, if you add a second battery, there is always the chance that one or both of the batteries can be damaged by overcharging as well as damaging the charging system in the tow vehicle. My Dometic charger will control the current feeding the RV battery and keep it happy. Even when the truck voltage is dropped to 12 volts by the computer (to help with truck gas mileage) the Dometic will feed and never over charge the battery. The small battery charger I bought only draws 10 amps. Be mindful of the amperage delivered by your truck 7-pin hookup when choosing a battery charger . Also, check and see if the Dometic can feed your RV battery from both the solar panels and the tow vehicle charging system or is it just one or the other. I ran a short jumper wire from the 10 amp feed on the back of the charger to the 12 volt control input on the front of the charger. This way the charger is always powered up when the 7-pin plug is plugged into the tow vehicle. In my Chevy, the factory always has the 20 amp center pin hot, even when the truck is not running. That is not a problem for me with my rig, but if you only want the charger to come on when the truck is running, a 12 volt control wire must be added and coming from a point that is only hot when the truck is running. Your other option would be to install a 12 volt relay in the7-pin trailer 12 volt wire. The relay should be controlled by the truck ignition circuit. (benefit is no extra control wire from truck to trailer)
