Question:
I have a 2011 Audi Q7 TDI. Im researching adding a brake controller and looking for plug and play options only as I do not want to cut and splice wires. What top 3 plug and play options would you recommend? Thanks

Hi Jim!
I can definitely get you three good options for brake controllers that will be plug and play for your 2011 Audi Q7. Just be aware, all of these do require you to have the factory tow package. If you are unsure if you have this or not, you will want to contact an Audi dealer with your VIN. They should be able to tell you pretty quickly.
If you do have that tow package, check out these models:
Curt Spectrum Brake Controller w/ Custom Harness - Dash Mounted Knob - Up to 4 Axles - Proportional # C74YV
Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers # TK22FR
Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller - Up to 3 Axles - Proportional # TK90160
Redarc Tow-Pro Link Bluetooth Brake Controller - Off-Road Mode - 4 Axles - Proportional # RED57AR
The Curt comes with the pigtail harness specific to your Audi, and is truly plug and play. You will just need to figure out where you want to mount the dash knob (which has a stick on mount or a dill to mount). The most difficult part of this install will likely be figuring out where you want to put the knob. I must admit to not being a huge fan of the Curt brake controllers as their reliability has come into question a few times, but they do work pretty well.
The Tekonsha Primus IQ is a tried and tested brake controller that works extremely well and is very reliable. You do need to also get that pigtail as it doesn't come with the controller, but it does make this a plug and play controller, for the most part. There would be drilling required to install this brake controller on your dash. This does also install in the footwell, which I personally an not a huge fan of, but that's because I'm 6'5" and I tend to smack my knees on this kind of controller. Most people don't have this problem.
The last option is from Redarc. It's their brand new wireless controller that can be used with your smartphone or the included remote. I am very preferrable to Redarc controllers as they are also extremely reliable and just get the job done. The only thing you need to be aware of with this controller is you have to have the USCAR connection on your 7-way. I have a picture of that included, but the vast majority of 7-ways do use this style connector. I would still check though. If it were me, this is the controller I would go with. Yes, it is the most expensive option. But I think it is also the best controller.
What kind of trailer are you going to be towing?

Hey Jim, did you end up choosing one of those plug and play brake controllers for your Audi Q7? I'm curious which option worked best for your setup and towing needs. Your experience could help others deciding between the Curt, Tekonsha, and Redarc models.
