How to Haul an E-Bike w/a 2013 VW Golf GTI

Updated 02/07/2026 | Published 02/02/2026

Question:

I have a 2013 VW Golf GTI and am looking to purchase a trunk/hatch mounted bike rack. Do you have any racks you can recommend for a 60+lbs electric bike? Any help you can provide will be appreciated.

Hey Shawn. Trunk/hatch mounted bike racks top out at 35 lbs per bike. You'll destroy the back of your Golf trying to put a 60+ lbs e-bike on one of them.

To transport a e-bike with your 2013 VW Golf GTI you'll need to install a hitch. I recommend the EcoHitch Invisi Trailer Hitch item # EH83KR. This custom fit hitch has a 2" receiver with a 300 lbs tongue weight capacity. It also has a 2,000 lbs capacity if you ever want to tow a trailer.

I really like the EcoHitch item # EH83KR because the main crosstube installs entirely behind the rear bumper leaving only the 2" receiver exposed. This not only looks better but helps with ground clearance. I attached a picture below so you can see what it will look like installed. Please note that this hitch will not work if Golf is a R model.

With the hitch installed you can use the Benton LittleShift Bike Rack for 1 Bike item # B54VR to transport your e-bike. It has a 80 lbs capacity and works with tires up to 4" wide. I linked a review video below so you can see the features of this bike rack demonstrated.

What kind of bike do you have?

@ShawnK You're welcome! Glad you liked it. I wanted to give you an option for hauling a bike. Your VoltBike Bravo is going to work great with the Benton LittleShift Bike Rack item # B54VR. You can either secure your bike by the front wheel or the frame.
