Will Automatic Changeover 2-Stage Propane Regulator Help With Tank Freeze?
Updated 02/06/2026 | Published 02/01/2026 >
Question:
Will this help with tank freeze? I have heard of connecting two 40 tanks together to help with this issue vs having to purchase a 100 tank to last longer. I am using on a generator during power outages in NC.

Hey TJ, thanks for reaching out. Short answer, no, the JR Products automatic changeover regulator # 37207-30395 won’t stop a tank from freezing by itself. What it does well is automatically switch between two tanks so you don’t run out of propane, but it doesn’t add heat or change how propane behaves in cold weather. Freeze-up happens when a tank can’t vaporize propane fast enough under load, especially with something like a generator pulling steady demand. For generator use during outages in NC, keeping tanks out of the wind, avoiding heavy loads, and using multiple tanks is usually the best real-world solution. Hopefully it warms up down there soon though.

I agree with Jesse. We use this on our travel trailer between our two propane tanks & it works great so we never run out of propane.

I personally would try to upsize my propane. Tanks so for instance, if you're using a 20 pounder, try to up it to 30 or 40 pound tanks or whatever fits in your space that you can secure it down on. And this regulator is good. Just keep in mind. How much btus you will need for what you're doing at a maximum moment? Normally the issue is, the tanks are too small. Pumping out too much gas and it's just freezes them over even on hot days. It could do it
