Updated 01/21/2026 | Published 01/17/2026

Question:

Im looking for a crossbar system to install on a leer xr camper shell on my 2004 tacoma double cab, short bed. Can you recommend a system to purchase? Its not letting me filter by my specific vehicle size on the site.

Yeah, that things fun with camper shells. I've got exactly what you need though Lauren.

If your Leer XR camper shell does not have tracks installed, I recommend the Rhino-Rack Heavy-Duty Roof Rack for Camper Shells item # Y01-120B with 54" long crossbars, item # Y01-130B with 59" long crossbars or item # Y01-140B with 65" long crossbars.

These roof racks come with 63" long tracks that install on your shells top that allow you to move the square crossbars up and down their length. The kit includes mounting legs and all hardware you'll need to get them installed. The crossbars and rack set up have a 220 lbs capacity.

Please note that the tracks can be trimmed down to accommodate a shorter top.

If your Leer XR shell has tracks already installed, you'll want the Rhino-Rack Roof Rack for Thule and Yakima Tracks item # Y01-120B-NT for 54" long crossbars or item # Y01-140B-NT for 65" long crossbars. These kits include the towers necessary to attach to built in tracks. The square crossbars have a 220 lbs capacity.

What kind of gear do you plan on putting on top of your camper shell and does yours have tracks installed?

I bought one a couple of years ago and mounted an Ikamper roof top tent on it. I drove from Florida to Maine with mine. I was gone for 6 months. Great rack and absolutely no issues!

I installed the Rhino system with heavy duty cross bars on my son's 2010 long bed Tacoma. It's great and install wasn't too difficult (does require drilling into the shell, so measure twice and drill once!). One "tip" is to account for the rubber "feet" length that plug into the end of the tracks when you're measuring how far down to cut them and where to place them. We left my son's tracks a little long and the rubber feet aren't snug to the camper shell since the shell slopes down in the rear. Purely cosmetic, but kind of annoying. Also with the feet, they have a rubber tongue with a hole that slides into the channel of the rail. Your first and last screws on the rail will go down through the hole in the tongue to hold the rubber foot properly in place. So it's important that you account for the length of your rail, position of first screw, and the necessity of it giong down through the hole/slot in the tongue when measuring.

Hey! I looked at that but the tracks are a few inches too long for my 5 ft truck bed. Do you offer anything with tracks under 57 inches, or an option with crossbars that attach directly to a fiberglass shell? I have a Leer XR shell that doesn't have tracks installed already. Looking to haul mostly small craft boats lol. Thank you!

@LaurenC We sure do Lauren but they're not in a kit. You'll need the following parts: 55" Long Rhino-Rack RTC-Style Roof Rack Tracks item # RTC14 Rhino-Rack Quick Mount Legs item # RRRLT600 54" Long Rhino-Rack Heavy-Duty Roof Rack Crossbars item # RB1375B-2 The only crossbars we have that attach directly to your topper without tracks are the 48" Long SeaSucker Monkey Bars Roof Rack item # 298-SX6000B. They use suction cups to attach and have a 150 lbs capacity.
