Do I Need a Flat Tow Braking System for a 2024 Ford Maverick?

Updated 02/05/2026 | Published 01/14/2026

Question:

I am setting up my flat tow. 2017 Freedom Elite Ford E450 series with 2024 Ford Lariat Hybrid. I have the Roadmaster Stowmaster 501 Tow Bar and Baseplate. All wiring has been done. I think I need safety cables, power cord rv 7 to 6 tow vehicle. I was told with the tow capacity of 8000 lbs and maverick under 4000 lbs that braking system not necessary. So far I have installed everything myself and had my ford service man check it all out. Ready to hit the road. Could you help with getting me the rest of my equipment to finally flat tow? I don’t actually know what items to get.

Hey Cyndi, thanks for the information! For safety cables, I recommend the RoadMaster 68" Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables item # RM-643. Coiled safety cables are best used on tow bars, like your Stowmaster item # RM-501, that do not have safety cable channels. The tension provided by the coils helps keep the cables from hanging down and getting tangled on something or dragging on the ground.

For the 7-Way to 6-Way cable, you'll want the Roadmaster Coiled Tow Bar Power Cord - 7-Way to 6-Way item # RM88BQ.

Whoever told you you don't need a braking system was wrong. A braking system is required to be used in 49 states along with Canada no matter where your Maverick is registered. Texas is the only one with a 4,000 lbs weight exemption but if you're traveling through the rest of the country you'll be required to have one. Safety wise, I strongly recommend using one. Having to quickly stop a 4,000 lbs vehicle being towed behind a 14,000 lbs motorhome without one is going to cause damage to your tow bar, your motorhome, and your Maverick. The tow bar arms aren't designed to withstand that amount of force during sudden braking.

To add a flat tow braking system to your 2024 Ford Maverick Lariat, I recommend the Curt RVi Series Shadow 2 item # RVI94FR. This is a permanently installed proportional braking system that slows or stops your Maverick with the same force as your motorhome. It has an inertia sensor built it that measures the amount of braking it provides. You can fine tune the settings using the included dash mounted display.

A nice perk of the Curt RVi Series Shadow 2 item # RVI94FR is the included charge line. This is required for your Maverick and it's going to keep your battery topped off on your trips. You'll be able to monitor the voltage from the dash display. It also includes everything you need hardware wise to get installed, along with the required breakaway kit.
