Can Bad Diverter Valve Cause Water Leak

Updated 12/24/2025 | Published 12/22/2025

Question:

I am experiencing the symptoms of a water leak. Pump wants to cycle just briefly every 3 to 5 minutes. I cannot find a leak anywhere. My question to you is could the cause be a faulty diverter valve allowing water to pass through back into the tank? I believe the valve I have is the BM44YR. Thank you

Hi William; it is possible for the valve to be bad and cause the issue you're describing. If you leave the tank empty and switch it to city, and that still fills the tank, that is a good indicator of a bad valve and you should replace it with # BM44YR.

If that doesn't seem to be the case, there are some pressure tests and other things you can do to try and figure out if you have a leak or not and locate it. I recommend looking around online to find these methods. Even if you aren't actively seeing water anywhere it could be in a spot you're not finding and you really don't want to end up with water damage.

What kind of trailer do you have?

2018 Keystone 5 th wheel had cracked elbow on water diverter valve and dripped constantly. Replaced with this item and problem was solved. I am 72 year old USMC vet with basic mechanical skills and limited plumbing experience. Job took about 2 hours to remove old valve and replace with new. Hardest part was removing sealant and gaining access to water center compartment and re-sealing it with new caulking. Make sure to mark all connections with matching numbers or letters in sharpie or no run ink before disassembly.
