Can I Use the Power Watchdog Surge Protector w/the Power Center Surge Protector and Voltage Booster?

Updated 12/17/2025 | Published 12/13/2025

Question:

Just bought a 2026 Keystone Cougar half ton. I am looking into surge protectors and was wondering if I get the watchdog HU74ZR do I need the HU82VR also or is that just overkill?

Hey Shawn, congrats on the new 5th wheel trailer. The Watchdog Power Center Surge Protector and Voltage Booster item # HU74ZR is all you're going to need. Adding in the Power Watchdog Surge Protector item # HU82VR would be redundant. The item # HU74ZR has all the surge protector features and is a voltage booster.

You're right. If you have the new Power Center it is a all-in-one unit now.

@Garry, Correct, Autoformer and a Watchdog in one neat container. We have the 50 amp unit and it was a truly corrected our concern (low park voltage). Well worth the price paid! My plans are to move the unit inside in the near future (to avoid possible theft during tourist season).

@Garry I agree. No need for anything else. What a great product. Only issue I've had is I was getting an E-8 error code (no neutral at coach). Had trailer checked by an electrician and no neutral fault detected so I went into the app and was able to disable the E-8 fault detection. Been working great ever since. Worth every penny.

I wanted to hard wire ours in the basement but it was too tall. The plan was to lay it down but after seeing it in person I thought I probably shouldn't. I was able to remove the handle and now it fits. :).
