How to Reduce Hitch Play When Using a Hitch Extender for a Cargo Carrier?

Updated 12/10/2025 | Published 11/13/2025

Question:

Hello I use a hitch mount basket on my truck sometimes to move different things. I recently got a extension so it pushes my basket out and I can still open my tailgate. There is so much slop in everything its crazy. That is part of the reason I extended the hitch so the baskit couldnt hit my truck in the folded up position. I previously bout a anti rattle device but it still allows it to move alot side to side. I just really want something that can tighten everything up back there. I know a basket that didnt fold up would help but I really like the option of folding it up and out of the way when I use it. Is the blue ox anti rattle device with the 2 u bolts the best set up? I can send you pictures of my set up once you reply. Thanks

Hello Randy,

Yes, when using an extender, having that extra piece will definitely cause quite a bit of play.

I’m curious what kind of anti-rattle device you’re using now? You’re absolutely right to be looking at the Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer. It’s one of the best options for tightening things up since it uses a 2 U-bolt design to secure everything really well.

If you have a 2-1/2" receiver on the back of your F-250 and are using a 2" adapter, you’ll want the # BX88312.

If you have a 2" receiver on your F-250, you’ll want the # BX88224.

I’d recommend installing one where the extender goes into the receiver, and another where the cargo carrier attaches. That’ll get things as tight and solid as possible.

So what size is your receiver, and what kind of adapter are you using? I would like to verify which ones you need, but need a little more information to do that =)

Hey Randy, did you get a chance to try the Blue Ox hitch immobilizer on your setup? I’m curious if it tightened up the play between your extender and basket the way you wanted. Your update could make it easier for others dealing with the same issue.

@KateF Yes the blue ox is the only way to go. With one u bolt pulling it down and one pulling it to the side it completely stabilizes and eliminates all the play at the connection. I have no idea why this style isn't more available. Blue Ox is the only company that makes it and no one local had any in stock. I am glad I stumbled across it, it is the only design that will truly stabilize what is connected to your hitch.

@RandyE Thanks for the response Randy! I am happy to hear that it worked great for your set-up. Sounds like they might have a good patent on the design which is why others do not have it available. I hope you have a wonderful Holiday Season filled with your most favorite people =)
