Question:

We’re shopping for a used fifth wheel and our truck only has a gooseneck setup. What trailers are easiest to convert to gooseneck?

Wendy - that's an interesting question, but good thinking because 5th wheel hitches are a bit of a pain and are quite heavy/bulky compared to a single ball in the bed. Look for fifth wheels with Lippert 1116, 1716, 1621, or Rhino pin boxes - MORryde makes a GooseTech for each.
# MR77MV for Lippert 1116 11,500 lbs to 14,000 lbs Gross Towing Weight
# MR39MV for Lippert 1716 11,500 lbs to 14,000 lbs Gross Towing Weight
# MR97MV for Lippert 1621 14,000 lbs to 18,000 lbs Gross Towing Weight
# MR24MV for Lippert Rhino 18,000lbs + Gross Towing Weight

There are options for other pin boxes as well, but these are among the most common that you'll find.
Whatever you choose, plan on adding chain kit # GY49GR with the conversion to be safe and legal.

The MORryde 5th wheel to gooseneck conversions bolt right on where the old pin box was (no modification needed) and add rubber shock cushioning for a smoother ride. It’s a big upgrade over an adapter and saves you from installing a bulky hitch.

Do you have any specific brands in mind for the trailer?

We’ve been looking at a couple of Grand Designs and maybe an older Jayco Eagle if we can find one clean. I’ve never towed anything this big though. kinda nervous about switching to gooseneck.

@Wendy Totally get that, Wendy - it’s a jump at first, but once you tow a fifth wheel off a gooseneck ball, you’ll wonder why everyone doesn’t do it. The hookup’s easier, it’s quieter, and you can finally use your truck bed again. Funny enough, my neighbors just bought a Jayco Eagle and did the GooseTech swap last month - they were blown away by how much smoother it rode. They camped down at Table Rock Lake (Missouri) and said it didn’t beat them up on those Ozark hills like the old setup did. If you find a Grand Design or Jayco with one of those Lippert pin boxes, you’ll be in great shape to swap to a MORryde. Want me to show you how to spot the model tag when you go look at one?
