Will the 6,000 lbs Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brakes Work on a 5,200 lbs Axle?

Updated 10/26/2025 | Published 10/25/2025

Question:

Hi, I have 5200 LB axles on my 5th wheel with the Dexter never adjust electric brakes. Will the 23-458-459 brake assemblies work on the 5200 LB axles?

They sure will Thomas. The Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brakes - 12" - Left/Right Hand Assemblies item # 23-458-459 are exactly what you need for your 5,200 lbs axles. These 12" x 2" drum brakes will bolt directly to your Grand Design's 5 bolt brake mounting flange. This set comes with both left and right brake assemblies.

If the hardware on your current brakes is the original set, I recommend replacing them when you swap out the brakes. You'll need the Mounting Bolts and Hardware for 12" Brake Assemblies item # BRKH12. This will replace one axles worth of hardware. They'll need to be torqued to 30-50 ft-lbs.

Did you have an issue with your brakes or are you doing routine maintenance?

Thanks Jerrod, I'm just doing routine maintenance. I will order the hardware kits as you recommended.. I also need two wheel seals. I ordered a wheel bearing kit from you early last year when I serviced the hubs. The invoice shows 10-36 wheel seals. The previous seal also had a number of GS-2125DL. What seals do I need?

@ThomasH You're welcome! For future reference, the bearing kit you need with the GS-2125DL seal is the item # BK3-310 not the item # BK3-300 you got last year. For just the GS-2125DL seal you'll need item # GS-2125DL. They are sold individually.
