Will 3-3/8" Bike Rack Shank Depth Fit the Yakima BackSwing Swing Away?

Updated 10/17/2025 | Published 10/15/2025

Question:

Hi, returning customer here. Would this swing away work for a 98 lb. bike rack that requires a 3 3/8 inch 86mm depth past center of hitch pin hole to it? Thanks.

Hey Mauricio, thanks for reaching out!

We're looking at about 3-1/4" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back end of the receiver on the Yakima BackSwing Swing Away # Y02483. It can handle up to 250 lbs of weight (bikes and rack combined) so it will be good on that end, but we're going to be hard-pressed for the back-end clearance.

I'm curious what bike rack that you have - most of them don't have stipulations for the back of the hitch receiver.

Yeah it’s the velocityraxx six bike carrier. It did not fit into a regular hitch extension so it sounds like it will also not work here.

@MauricioB Ah, that makes complete sense! Are you needing to open a rear door with the rack installed? I'm just trying to make sure I know what's going on in case we have an alternative solution for you.
