Hello Brion,

You could use the etrailer Hitch Mount Spare Tire Carrier - 2" Hitch # e98ZR on your Jayco Redhawk if you really wanted to, since it’s designed to fit into a 2" receiver and can handle an 8-lug wheel like yours. It will hold the tire securely, so technically it gets the job done. The downside is that # e98ZR doesn’t offer many of the features you’ll probably appreciate on a motorhome, it doesn’t tilt down, which means you’d have to lift that heavy LT225/75R16 spare into place, and it also takes up your hitch completely, so you can’t flat tow or carry another accessory at the same time.

The Roadmaster Hitch Spare Tire Mount with 2" Receiver Opening - 2" Hitches # RM-195225 really shines as the better choice. It’s built with motorhomes in mind, so it has the strength for larger RV wheels, and the tilting design lets you roll the tire on instead of trying to muscle it up, a huge back saver. On top of that, # RM-195225 includes a built-in 2" receiver, so you don’t lose the ability to tow or use a hitch accessory. In short, while # e98ZR will work and is definitely the more cost effective choice, but the # RM-195225 is going to make your life on the road a whole lot easier and give you peace of mind knowing it was made for exactly this kind of setup.

Any fun adventures this year? Where did you go, what did you see? Or better yet, what has been your most favorite trip of all time?

@BrionH The main difference between the Roadmaster # RM-195125 and # RM-195225 spare tire carriers really comes down to the size and weight of the spare tire they’re designed to handle. The # RM-195125 is built for smaller tires, up to about 16.5 inches in wheel diameter, and it’s rated for up to 6,000 pounds of flat towing with around 200 pounds of tongue weight. It’s a great option if your spare isn’t oversized and you want something a little more compact, which can sometimes make it easier to still open rear doors on an RV or van. The # RM-195225, on the other hand, is the heavy-duty version. It’s designed for much larger wheels, from around 16 inches all the way up to 24.5 inches, and it can handle heavier, offset, or even dually-style wheels. It also has a higher towing and tongue weight capacity, up to 10,000 pounds towing and 400 pounds of tongue weight. That extra capacity makes it perfect if you’ve got a big motorhome, larger trailer setup, or just need to carry a seriously heavy spare. I am glad that you asked that question, looks like the # RM-195125 will be the better choice seeing how your wheel is 16". Saves quite a bit of money =)
