Can Trailer Axle Replacement be 1/4 inch Shorter in Length

Updated 09/12/2025 | Published 08/21/2025

Question:

Hello My question is I own a 1988 cox boat trailer with. 16ft aluminum bass boat. I’m looking to replace a bent axle the measurement is 74.25” hub face to hub face with the spring center is 66” which is spring over axle. The trailer is 69” wide outside to putside of frame at the axle. The hubs are 4 on 4” for the rims. Looking for a replacement axle. Would a 74” hub face to hub face work?

Hey Richard, when picking out a replacement axle the most important dimension to match exactly is the spring seat center to spring seat center as that has to match up to the trailer's frame brackets. Going with a 1/4 inch shorter overall length axle like you asked about would not be an issue at all.

We do not have a matching axle for your trailer at this time though so you would need to find a local trailer shop to you who can order in custom axles and get them the specs you need.

Hey Richard, did you have any luck finding a local trailer shop to order the custom axle you need? I'm eager to hear how it worked out for you, as it could help others in a similar situation.
