Replacement 12" Brakes for a Kelsey Hayes Axles w/a 4 Bolt Mounting Flange

Updated 09/02/2025 | Published 08/07/2025

Question:

I have an old trailer with a 5200 pound axle. It has Kelsey Hayes drum breaks on it with an odd size bolt pattern. It has four bolts to hold on the backing plate. The top two bolts holes are 3 1/ 8 inches apart well the bottom two holes are 2 1/2 inches apart making a trapezoid style shape. Wondering if you have a set of brakes that can accommodate this? I would be looking at a full set electric set with backing plate and drums.

Hey Brian, thank you so much for that detailed information. You're going to need the Dexter Electric Brake Kit item # 23-105-106-09. This kit includes the left and right side brake assemblies which fit your Hayes axles.

The Dexter item # 23-105-106-09 have the 4 bolt mounting pattern which fits both AL-KO and Hayes axles and a 5 bolt flange for Dexter axles.

For replacement drums, I'll need you to pull one of your hubs and see if there are numbers stamped into the sides of the inner and outer bearings. If they do not have numbers stamped into the side you'll need to measure your spindles using a digital caliper like item # PTW80157. I'll need the C and D dimensions shown in the diagram below.

Additionally, I am also going to need to know your lug nut pattern so you do not have to change wheels. I have linked an FAQ below that'll show you how to measure them.

You can add this information and any other questions you have where it says Reply to Jerred H and I'll be happy to answer them.

Hey Brian, did you have a chance to check the numbers on your bearings or measure your spindles with a caliper? I'm eager to help you find the right replacement drums and ensure everything fits perfectly.
