Can The Shank Of the Blue Ox Adjustable Ball Mount BLU84HR Be trimmed?

Updated 08/15/2025 | Published 07/20/2025

Question:

I’m interested in the Blue Ox adjustable hitch with clamshell ball, but have an issue with the 7” of . The extra length of the vertical adjustment bar will cause the bottom of the bar to scrape on my steep driveway. In order to avoid the ground clearance issue, the hitch would need to be reduced to a 6” . Can I cut a portion of the vertical bar off, at the bottom, in order to make this into a 6” hitch, instead of a 7”?

Hi Ricky!

Can the Blue Ox Adjustable Ball Mount with Clamshell for 2" Hitch - 7" Drop/Rise # BLU84HR be trimmed? Yes, but with a few caveats. First, you will void the warranty. Second, depending on your experience with doing this kind of thing, you way weaken it's structural integrity, so I can't guarantee its capacity after doing so. I can't recommend doing this for those reasons.

That said, I recommend going with the Weigh Safe Aero Hitch for 2" Hitch - 6" Drop/7" Rise - 12.5K - Steel # WS67MR instead. This already has a slightly higher capacity, has 6" of drop (so it won't hang down as much), has a clamshell style adapter for the ball, includes a lock for the ball platform, and includes a tongue weight scale. So it meets your needs better and includes more features than the Blue Ox. And it's less expensive!

What are you planning on pulling with this?

Hey Ricky, Did you decide to go with the Weigh Safe Aero Hitch instead of modifying the Blue Ox? I'm curious because I want to make sure you found the best solution for your driveway situation. Let me know how it worked out!
