How Do I Know How Much of a Drop I Need on an Adjustable Hitch for Travel Trailer?
Updated 09/02/2025 | Published 06/25/2025 >
Question:
I have an F350 and am about to purchase a bumper pull Travel Trailerinch RV that will use a 2 5/16 ball, all good so far, but how do I know whether I need the 6inch , or the 8inch ? My F350 is standard unlifted height, but wouldnt it be a crap show if I bought a 6inch and it wasnt enough of a to tow the trailer level - which is critical. Your advice would be appreciated.

Hello Greg,
Great question, and yes level towing is important.
The average height for a mid-size to full-size travel trailer is 22 to 28 inches, the average height for an F-350 with 4 wheel drive is 20–24 inches, with that being said you will most likely need the Weigh Safe Hitch w/ Built-In Scale for 2.5" Hitch - 6" Drop/7" Rise - 22K - Steel # WS88RR.
The best way to figure it out is to put your truck on level ground, then measure from the ground to the upper inside part or the receiver (please refer to attached image). Then whatever camper you are interested in, I would reach out to them to see how high the coupler height is (will want to measure to the bottom of coupler from the ground, also in attached image).
The Weigh Safe Hitch w/ Built-In Scale for 2.5" Hitch - 6" Drop/7" Rise - 22K - Steel # WS88RR is an excellent adjustable hitch! What really makes it unique is the built in scale. You want your trailers tongue weight to be 10-15% of your trailers overall weight, and the scale makes it easy to know if you need to make adjustments of how you have things packed in there. The weigh safe guys were here not too long ago with a driving stimulator and I was eager to jump in the seat, they set it up so you can see what it is like to tow a trailer that is not loaded correctly and it was not possible to keep it in a straight line, and then what it is like to tow with things loaded up as they should. The difference was really neat to see first hand.
Are you new to the Travel Trailer world, or just getting a new one?

Hey Greg, Did you have a chance to measure your truck and the trailer's coupler height to see if the 6-inch drop hitch was the right fit? I'm asking because knowing your experience could help others make the right choice for level towing.
