Parts Needed to Add a Brake Controller to a 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500

Updated 08/15/2025 | Published 07/19/2025

Question:

Hi! I have a 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 WT, 2wd. The truck was not equipped with a tow package from the factory. I have added a hitch and the end plug for trailer hookup. My question is, can I add a brake controller so I can use with my car trailer? What do you recommend? Thanks!

Hey Darren!

You can absolutely add a brake controller to your 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500, but we'll need to do some digging in order to make sure we get you the correct parts. The Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Brake Controller w/ Custom Harness # RED65CR is a plug and play option that I absolutely love because of how versatile it is and it doesn't take up any room in your cab. This comes with a wiring adapter for if your Silverado has the tow package.

I know you said you don't have the tow package, but when I looked at the owner's manual for your truck I didn't see anything about wiring provisions for a brake controller, so I wonder if a plug already exists? Did you have to run wiring the length of your truck, or were you able to add the trailer plug to existing wiring towards the back of your truck?

Hey Darren, Did you find out if there was existing wiring for the brake controller in your Silverado, or did you have to run new wiring? I'm asking because knowing your experience could really help others in a similar situation. Let me know how it went!
