Can an Aftermarket Brake Controller Be Used on a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado without Issue

Question:

2022 Chev Silverado 1500 with Duramax and Max Towing Package. When i connect my trailer everything works but after a couple of brake applications i get a loss of trailer brakes with the brake controller and the display says trailer brakes disabled service trailer brakes. If i shut the vehicle off and restart everything works again and after a few brake applications the same thing happens. I have hooked up to three different trailers with the same result. I just bought this truck new and my last truck worked without error on all three trailers. I have had the truck into the dealer and they say that gm is aware of this issue and is working on it. I bought this truck specifically because it is made to tow. I have a trip down south in February with my fifth wheel and i was wondering if gm cant find a fix would i be able to eliminate the integrated brake controller and put in a aftermarket controller without causing trouble with electronics on the truck.

I am sorry to hear that you are having some problems with your new truck. But yes, you can add an aftermarket brake controller without causing issues with the electronics in your truck. You will get error codes on your dash using an aftermarket controller, but you can prevent that from happening by having your truck flashed at the dealership to remove the integrated brake module.
