Question:

Hi guys I’m wondering what is the best transmission cooler you can recommend for my 2002 Tahoe which I will be towing with. Ideally a direct fit, or at least an easy to adapt fit. It’s a 5.3L LT with 4-speed transmission. Thanks for your help.

Hello Dale, thanks for reaching out. The best transmission cooler for your 2002 Chevy Tahoe 5.3L if the following:

- Derale Dyno-Cool Tube-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit - Class IV - Economy # D12904

This is a 15-1/4" Wide x 10" tall x 3/4" deep Aluminum cooler. Keep in mind, the Derale Radiator Adapter Fitting # D13018 will be required only if your vehicle is equipped with 5/8" hex on trans lines.

Ok great. How direct-fit would you say this unit is for my vehicle? I think I read somewhere else on your website that plate-fin style are even better than tube-fin coolers. Is that accurate, and are there any of that style available for my year and model? Besides the part you mentioned, are there any other parts I should purchase for install? I would also like to install a temperature gauge. Do you recommend a pan-style or an in-line style, and why? Thanks for your help.

@Dale It should be a direct fit, with the # D13018 adapter being the only potentially necessary add-on. I recommended the Plate-Fine # D12904just because it is the largest transcooler we offer for your vehicle. The tube fin can cool a bit better but they are not as robust/durable. If you want a tube fin cooler we do have the # D13611 but this is a good bit smaller than the # D12904.
