Question:

Hello, I have an older, 2007 Toyota RAV4 with an external spare tire mounted to a swing rear door. I am purchasing a Velotric Fold Plus 1 but want to have the option of transporting it on a rack since I need the storage space for longer road trips. The bike will weigh around 63 lbs. I only need to transport this bike, so it will ride in the closest tray to the car, but because of the tire, I wonder which bike rack has enough clearance and is strong enough for this bike? Will the Swagman one-bike hitch rack be the best? I also have a limited budget for this so I dont want to spend too much but I want to make sure it is safe on the highway and going over bumps. Hello Melissa, thanks for reaching out. For carrying just the one 63 lb Velotric Fold Plus 1 what I recommend is the Benton Bike Rack for 1 Bike # B54VR. It holds just the single bike and has a capacity of 80 lbs, so it will be plenty strong for your bike. It is also very competitively priced compared to other single bike racks.

It provides a good bit of clearance between the hitch and the bike. Depending on your setup, you may need to end up using a hitch extension like part # e88YR to bring the bike a bit farther away from the vehicle.

The hitch extensions do bring the center of weight farther from the car, so our rule of thumb is your hitches carrying capacity will be reduced by 50%. For just the single bike rack though this will not be a concern.
