Best Suspension Enhancement Option For 2024 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter

Updated 05/08/2025 | Published 04/23/2025

Question:

I have a 2024 Tacoma Trailhunter. I drive on pavement and do overeland trips with a Overland Boreas Trailer. Overland bed load 200-300 pounds standard tongue weight 330 pounds tongue weight can increase to 530 pounds if bikes are added. Have rear end sag. what do you reccomend to control /prevent sag, but maintain good ride when truck unloaded. Note please this is a standard Trialhunter - so it has OldMan Emu shocks, and coil springs which give it added lift Thank you

Hello Tim, thanks for reaching out. The best option for this will be an air bag kit, the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs # F83VV. This will allow you to get the support you need to keep your truck level when you are loaded down. Then you can reduce the PSI when unloaded to keep the factory ride from getting too rough.

If your Trailhunter is lifted, the air bags can still be compatible, but you may need a spacer to compensate for the lift. Based on the specs I found online, the 2024 Trailhunter has a 1.5" rear lift so this will likely mean the 1-1/4" spacer part # F2536 will be required. The amount of lift does not always directly equate to the spacer size though.

Typically, the best practice is to install the brackets then measure the distance between and subtract the height of the air bag. The remainder will be what spacer you need.

You also have the option of adding an onboard compressor system. For that I recommend the Firestone Air Command # F56VV. This will allow you to monitor and fill the bags using your smartphone, or with the included remote.

@TimB Yes that setup could work also. The Timbrens are great for when you are loaded down, but they can make the ride a bit more rough when unloaded since they are not adjustable like the air bags. The Timbrens are much easier to install though, and we do have those parts you mentioned: - Timbren Suspension Enhancement System - Rear Axle # T67KR - Spacer Kit for Timbren Suspension Enhancement System # T33AV

I too have a stock trailhunter 2024 and have a Go Fast Camper installed on the back. This is approximately 330lbs constant on the bed of my truck. I think the springs have settled at about ~1” sag in the rear now. Will I be able to install the Firestone Ride Rite air bags with the camper already loaded on the vehicle? I presume I’ll be able to correct this sag & dial air pressure to ride more factory? If I order two sets of spacers (the 1-1/4” & the 2”), I’ll be able to return either set given best practice for installing with a factory lift in the rear of the Trailhunter? Thanks

@JaredF The air bags will eliminate virtually all of the sag but you would not want to install air bags with the camper loaded in the truck. It will need to be unloaded and generally the truck would go up on a lift with the axle supported, Yes you can order both sets of spacers and return the unused ones. People do this quite frequently actually since it can be tricky to determine the correct spacer size without first installing the air bag brackets.
