What Source Does The Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controller C51180 Use For Braking Power Supply?

Updated 04/09/2025 | Published 04/06/2025

Question:

If you do not have a factory controller but have a 7-way plug what source does this unit use for braking power supply? I have a 2022 colorado and have added the 7-way plug.

Hello Doug, thanks for reaching out. The Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controller # C51180 actually uses the brake light signal to know when to apply the brakes. It uses that mixed with an inertia sensor to determine braking power. So a factory brake controller with a blue wire running to the 7-way is not required. As long as your 7-way has a 12v pin and brake light signal, the controller will have everything it needs to operate. You just need a smartphone with the Curt OneControl app.

I hope this helps. Feel free to reach out with any other questions or comments and I will get back to you.

Thank you Jesse! I do have factory wiring connected to 7-way plug but will need to make sure 12v pin actually has power to it. I know some GM trucks left this disconnected at the under hood fuse box.

@Doug You SHOULD be good to go but yes definitely test your 7-way and verify. You can use a tester like part # C73NR or usually if you go to a shop or auto parts store they would have a tester you can use for free. Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.
