Can I Put Taller Tires On My 4x6 Utility Trailer?

Updated 10/27/2025 | Published 03/14/2025

Question:

I have a 4.80-8 trailer tire and want a taller tire for more clearance on the trailer. What size would you suggest? This is a 4x6 utility trailer only used on the farm, I know I will probably remove the fenders with a taller tire. Thanks

Hey Sheryl, thanks for reaching out. It may be possible to put larger tires on your trailer, but I really can't say exactly what size will work without looking at the trailer. If you are willing to move your fenders, the main thing to consider is the clearance on the inside of the tire. You want to have at least 1" between the inside of the tire and the frame of the trailer.

If you want to keep your current 8" wheels, the next size up from your 4.80-8 would be a 165/65-8 or 215/60-8.

The 4.80-8 tires are about 4.6" wide, and the 165/65-8 tires are about 6.6" wide. So the tire will sit 1" closer to the frame on the inside. They are only about 1/2" taller than the 4.80-8 tires so this would not gain you a ton of clearance.

A taller tire would be a 215/60-8. These would gain you about 1" of deck height, but they are 8.9" wide. So you would need a ton of clearance on the inside to be able to use these.

If you can measure the clearance on the inside of the tire with your current setup, that will tell us if the larger tires will fit. Leave a reply below and let me know how much clearance you are working with. I am happy to look into it and get back to you.

Hey Sheryl, were you able to measure the inside clearance on your trailer tires? Once you know that space, it’ll be easier to see if the 215/60-8 tires will fit. Let me know what you find—I’m happy to help narrow it down.
