Does Grease Seal of Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Prevent Grease from Getting on Brakes

Published 01/29/2025

Question:

Is the inner grease seal on this unit specifically designed to stop grease getting into the brakes due to the use of the EZ Lube System? I have had problems in the past with grease leaking past the seal when I grease the bearings using EZ Lube.

Hey Brian, yes the grease seal of the Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 3.5K Axles # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K is designed to prevent grease from getting on the brake components. But what I would guess happened to you is that you overfilled the hub with grease by accident which then caused the seal to fail once you got on the road. This is very easy to do with the EZ lube fittings which is why I strongly recommend not even using them. If you pack the hubs with grease by hand you will basically never have that problem. How much grease did you put in your hub when it failed? Most of the time the recommended amount is just too much.

Thanks Jameson for the information about EZ Lube. The grease leak happened to me a few years ago, and I can't remember how much I used. I will take your advice and pack the bearings by hand, that way I will see exactly what there condition is.

@Brian Good call! Let us know how it goes. You may find that your brake pads are shot too so check them out as well.
