Will Computer Flashing Be Required For 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Installing Brake Controller

Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 01/03/2025

Question:

I have a 2021 Jeep Gran Cherokee overland, it is prewired for a brake controller. I am looking at the curt c28sv brake controller. Do I need to have the computer flashed for this install?

Hi Ed; there will be no need to have the computer flashed to install a brake controller like the # C28SV. You will plug it into the tow port and everything should work as intended. However, I do have a different recommendation for a brake controller. Instead of the Curt Spectrum I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED24FR.

The Liberty is more reliable when compared to the Curt and it also has a smaller control knob that will look better in your Jeep. The design is similar so you will still mount the main unit behind the dash so the control knob will be the only thing visible in the cab.

Redarc doesn't have a wiring harness specific to your vehicle so you will need the # C51446 along with the Redarc Tow-Pro Wiring Adapter for Curt Brake Controller Harness # 331-TPH-019 for a plug and play installation. This setup will also save you a little money when compared to the Spectrum.

Hey Ed, how did things go with the brake controller setup on your Grand Cherokee? Did the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty end up working well for you? Your update could make it easier for others choosing between these controllers.
