Replacement Suspensions Components For A 1993 Bigfoot B-17 Travel Trailer

Updated 01/03/2025 | Published 01/01/2025

Question:

Hello, I need to replace very worn out leaf springs on my 1993 BigFoot B-17 travel trailer. So I took the measurements Eye-to-eye is ~24.5”, but I wont rely on that because of the leaf springs being really worn out and sagging. So I measured the Leaf Spring Flat Length, eye to eye along the curvature of the spring, and its 26inch or so The width of the leaf spring is 1 3/4, there are 5 leaves, 1 1/2inch thick altogether. My axle is 2 3/8inch which, I believe, means 3500 lb, but I am not 100 sure about that. Could you please suggest the replacement parts as they are really old/rusty: - Leaf Springs - Shackles 3inch between the holes - Bolts/nuts for both ends of the leaf springs + shackle seems to be 7/16inch at the front an 9/16inch at the back/shackle - U-bolts Thank you!

Hi Alex,

The correct way to measure your leaf springs would be to lift the trailer by the frame and let the weight of the axle hang to take the pressure off of the spring and then measure across eye-to-eye. Following the curvature of the spring will give you a longer length. Your axle being 2-3/8" in diameter would indicate that it's likely rated for 3,500lbs so within that weight class we have a few different lengths:

23-1/8" # e59SR
25-1/8" # e54SR
25-1/4" # DX23CR
27" # e97SR

Based on your 26" measurement flattened measurement and 3,500lb capacity the closest option would be the 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 3,500-lb Trailer Axles - 23-1/8" Long # e59SR. This has a 3-/2" height and 12-7/16" distance from the center of the spring to the center of one of the eyelets.

If you measured 3" between the holes of your shackle straps then you likely have a 3-1/8" spacing and could use a replacement like the # TRSL313. For the bolts you'll want to doublecheck the length, but would most likely have a 3" length (not including the bolt head) and could use part # 166081 for both the nut and bolt.

For the U-bolts I recommend the CE Smith U-Bolt Kit for Mounting 3,500-lb, Round Trailer Axles # CE23002.
