How to Make Equipment Trailer Ramps Easier to Lift and Lower

Updated 11/17/2025 | Published 12/30/2024

Question:

I have an equipment trailer that have two heavy gates or ramps to load tractors on. My problem is in my age 71, I cannot lift anymore without help. I am about to install two speed boat winches on each side of trailer to pick up the ramps. Do you have a boat winch that the handle can used on either side of the same winch.

Hey Gary, we might actually have easier options for what you are looking for that I think you'd be happier with. Since it's an equipment trailer I imagine it has the standard heavy metal ramps that pivot on a 1-1/2 inch diameter shaft (I'd double check to be sure) which would allow you to use a spring like the part # RS16933RH for the right hand side and part # RS16933LH. These will make the ramps feel WAY lighter and would be way easier to deal with than moving a winch around.

I attached a picture of what this looks like installed for you to check out as well.

Hey Gary, how did things go with those ramp springs for your equipment trailer? Were they able to make lifting the gates any easier for you? Your experience could help others looking for a simpler way to handle heavy ramps.
