Are Soft Shackles or D-Ring Shackles Better

Updated 11/18/2025 | Published 12/27/2024

Question:

good morning. I purchased the Bulldog Winch Heavy-Duty Recovery Strap w/Reinforced Loop Ends - 3inch x 30foot - 30,000 lbs from Etrailer. Through my research Im trying to figure out what type of shackle ie: soft shackle or D shackle is best to use. Do you have any recommendations which one I should purchase? Thank you

Hi Mark; I would get a soft shackle like the Bulldog Winch Rope Shackle - Synthetic - Army Green - 8" Loop Diameter - 15,000 lbs # BDW26FR. Soft shackles are better for attaching to a vehicle and you don't have to worry about damage/harm if there is some sort of failure. I'll take synthetic rope flying at me or my rig over a chunk of metal any day.

Hey Mark, how did the soft shackle work out with your Bulldog recovery strap? Your experience could point others toward the best setup for their own recovery gear.

@RobinH Hi Robin, I used it once getting stuck in the desert sand and a 4x4 helped me out of the sand. The soft shackle was a bit tight feeding the ball into the loop but once it was connected it worked perfectly. Thank you, Mark
