Question:

What type of accessory/item can be used to carry a bikes for this rack? Is it sold by Malone and do y’all stock it?

Hey David, since the Malone CrossBed part # MAL57SR has much thicker crossbars the only way to carry a bike rack with it will be with a rack that attaches to the top channels. For that we have Thule ProRide XT part # TH598004 which allows you to keep the front wheel mounted on the bike as well.

Hey David, how did the Thule ProRide XT work out with your Malone CrossBed rack? Your update could make it easier for the next person trying to carry bikes with that setup.

Howdy, I never purchased the Thule Pro Ride XT. I wasn't too keen about getting two different components from different manufacturers for my new rack so I searched the Malone website and purchased a similar Malone rack which etrailer.com did not carry. To make it fit with the new wider 3.5" Malone CrossBed bars they had to send me larger 3.5" mounting brackets and a couple of longer T-slot mounting bolts to secure the base to the top channel. While traveling I did have some problems keeping my bike secure in the rack and while using a rachet strap across the top tube, the bike slipped and was pulled over on two occasions. Not sure why that occurred so when I recently needed to transport two bikes, I fashioned two home-made support racks out of 2x6s and U-bolts and attached some old front fork quick-release clamps that worked well. I also had a homemade 2x6 support rack for two wheel mounts. With some matching paint, this somewhat crude and simple solution looked pretty good and did the job quite well.
