Hello Jason.

If you have the tow package on your 2016 Ford F-150 with 7 way connector on the back, then you don't need anything else.

The Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controller - 7-Way Plug Mount w/ Bluetooth App - 1 to 2 Axle - Proportional # C51180 installs directly to your 7 way connector, and then you download the app to your smart phone to control it. It is literally that simple. I have included an installation video on a F-150 so you can see for yourself.

Hey Jason, how did things go with the Curt Echo brake controller on your F-150? Did the Bluetooth connection and app setup work smoothly for you? Your update could make it easier for others using the same setup.

@KateF Good Morning Kate, thanks for reaching out! Yes, the Bluetooth seems to be connecting. But controller has issues sometimes, as one day it works and other days not so much. It likes to pulsate the breaks at slower speeds and then works fine at higher speeds. I have attempted to adjust maximum output and sensitivity several times. Currently have it set at a maximum output at 5 and sensitivity at 1. If I increase either one, at lower speeds, it seems to lock up the breaks. Also, I have the hazard lights off option off as well. If you have any suggestions, I would great appreciate it and again thank you so much reaching out. Current setup: 2016 F150, 2.7L, 4X4, with the tow package, towing a Winnebago 1708FB, Dry Weight (UVW): ~3,360 lbs.

@JasonY My pleasure Jason. The pulsing you’re feeling at low speeds usually happens when the Curt Echo’s settings are still a bit too strong for slow-speed braking. Even with max output at 5 and sensitivity at 1, the brakes can “grab,” so try lowering the max output to around 3.5–4 or dropping sensitivity to 0. This often smooths out low-speed stops. Intermittent operation is most often caused by the 7-way plug connection. If the plug isn’t perfectly tight or has any corrosion, the Echo can stay connected through Bluetooth but the braking signal becomes uneven. Cleaning the contacts and checking the ground pin is a good first step. If the trailer brakes or magnets are worn or out of adjustment, they can also pulse at low speeds but feel normal at higher speeds. If they haven’t been serviced recently, it may be worth a quick inspection. A simple test is to use the manual override at 10–15 mph. If the brakes still pulse, it’s likely a trailer brake or wiring issue. If they’re smooth, the Echo settings just need fine-tuning. Please, let me know how things go after you do the troubleshooting =)
