Does Ball Mount with 8 inch Rise Cause Reduction in Hitch Capacity
Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/15/2024 >
Question:
I have a 2023 Volvo XC90 with the Volvo hidden hitch installed. It is a 2-in ball but I need a 2 and 5/16 ball and an 8-in riser to tow a Winnebago micro mini. The vehicle tow capacity is 5000 lb and the tongue weight limitation is 500 lb. Without using an extender but just an adjustable ball mount receiver hitch with a 2 and 5/16 ball, do I compromise any vehicle limitations with an 8-in riser?

Hey Ely, a ball mount with a rise of 8 inches like the adjustable BulletProof Ball Mount part # MD206 would not reduce the capacity of the hitch it is installed in. While it does seem like it would add leverage it's not a significant enough amount to cause problems.
This ball mount has a 2 inch and a 2-5/16 inch ball.
