Question:

question on a surge protector for an RV. I bought a new RV it has a 50 amp service because the Trailor could have 2 acs mine only has one so it really only meads 30 amps but has a 50 amp coed. Could you use a 30 amp surge protector on it using a a dog bone of course or would you have to get a 50 amp one

Hey Greg,

Even though your trailer doesn't have two air conditioners the power center is set up for 50 amps which means it has two separate power legs built into the panel. If you used a adapter to switch down to 30 amp anything wired to the non-used power leg would not have power. If you pull the circuit breakers out you can see the busbars I'm talking about. One hot wire from the 50 amp power cord runs one of these busbars and the other runs to the other providing power to that whole bar to power your electronics/appliances. I've attached a picture from one of the panels # PD4590K18LS8 we offer that's designed for 50 amp service to show these busbars.

If you ever connected to a 50 amp outlet you wouldn't be able to use the 30 amp surge protector so you essentially wouldn't be able to fully use your trailer even though you have the power to. The manufacturers will also state that you'll need to match the trailer's capacity when sizing your surge protector as well so you'll want to go with the Power Watchdog Surge Protector with Bluetooth - Portable - 50 Amp # HU47FR to protect your trailer.

Hey Greg, how did things go with the Power Watchdog surge protector for your RV’s 50‑amp setup? Did it give you the protection and flexibility you needed when switching between hookups? Your experience could point others in the right direction.
