    Hi Bernadette, You would want to plug your 50 amp to 30 amp adapter in to the power pedestal and then connect your Portable Power Watchdog Surge Protector # HU42VR to the adapter. Once the Watchdog lights show that the connection is good you can connect the trailer power cord to the surge protector. If you don't have a 50 amp to 30 amp adapter you can use the # A10-5030FBK.

So there doesnt need to be a data plan on your phone for a hot spot or wife nearby for this to connect to. If you weren't near the surge protector there wouldn't be a way to communicate with it and see how it's functioning.

    Hey Harvey! Definitely a valid question - I'd hate to invest in something and run the risk of something happening to it. The Portable Power Watchdog Surge Protector # HU42VR has a loop at the bottom of the door that covers the connection so you can lock your power cord to the protector. An alternative to this is to use the hardwire version of the Power Watchdog Surge Protector # HU77FR which installs on the inside of your trailer as opposed to the outside.

The old Gen I 50A Watchdog was rated for 6,100 Joules which is I imagine where our mistake came from, and for that I apologize.
