How to Measure for a Replacement Hub

Hi - I have a 1959 sterling trailer with a wheel hub that has a crack in it. I am looking for a replacement, but have had no luck with trailer stores near me. I have a detailed drawing that I could send you to see if you can find something that would work. Thanks in advance...

Hey Jeff! You can email that picture to me directly if you would like. However, in order to find a replacement I would need to know what size bearings it uses and your lug pattern. There should be part numbers stamped into the sides of the bearings. If you can't read the numbers on them, then you can measure the spindle at points C and D to get the inner diameter so that we can verify the correct fit.

You'll need to use a digital caliper like item # PTW80157 to get the most accurate measurement possible down to the 3rd number past the decimal point.

Thanks Jerred, The hub is a 4 lug, but it uses bolts not studs. The bearings are Timken L44645, (the 5 is not fully formed, but that's what it probably is) The spindle measured 1.002 with my caliper. I don't see a way to attach a picture in this format, I will respond to the email you sent w a pic. Thanks!

@JeffT Thank you so much for all of the detailed information. I have one hub that will work with your spindle it is the CE Smith Trailer Hub Assembly w/ Carrying Case for 2,500-lb Axles item # CE13100. This hub has a 4 on 4 bolt pattern so you will want to measure your current hub to ensure this will match up. If you measure from left to right or top to bottom you should get 2.8" from the center to center of the lug bolts. It will measure 4" across if you do it diagonally.

Thanks Jerred - I do have a 4 on 4 and 2 and 7/8 hub/wheel currently. The problem I've had matching locally is due to the depth of the wheel and where the bearings would sit. Will the CE13100 bearings fit onto 3 3/8" long spindle that I have on my trailer? The photos look like it is a deeper hub.

@JeffT No, it will not. In order to get the CE Smith Trailer Hub item # CE13100 to work with your trailer and wheels you'll need to change your spindle to the BT8 Spindle item # TRU94FR.

In order to determine the torque rating for the lug nuts on your trailer you will need to know check out the chart I attached that shows all of the torque specs for all the trailer lugs available based on stud size, wheel material and wheel size.
