Can a 7-Way Junction Box Be Used for a 4-Way

Question:
Can I use a 7-wire junction box to connect a 4-wire harness? I need to replace a 4-wire trailer-side connector/lead and I like the idea of a sealed box in lieu of butt or other connectors to join the new jacketed lead to the existing wiring harness.

There's no reason you couldn't use a 7-way junction box like the part # 38656 to install a 4-way. It would be just a matter of wiring up only 4 posts of the junction box on the input and output side of the box instead of 4.
With only 4-wires going into and out of the box the rubber grommet would be too big to provide a seal for the wires. You would need to use a sealant like # 0160297 to seal the grommet.
I attached an install video for you to check out as well.
