Replacing Equalizer And Shackles On 2018 Keystone Sprinter 5th Wheel 269FWRLS

Updated 09/16/2024 | Published 09/08/2024

Question:

2018 Keystone Sprinter 5th Wheel 269FWRLS I am looking to upgrade my OEM equalizer and shackles. Here is what I have along with dimensions. Note: I cannot lower the height of my camper as it is already tilted up to the front so I must maintain the current height or raise it if possible. Tandem trailer axle spacing measures 33.5” to 34” each side. I guess that makes is a 33” axle spacing. Dexter axles - 5200 lb capacity each The current cast iron equalizer has a 4” rise from the spring bolt holes to the hanger bolt hole. The horizontal length between spring bolt holes is approx. 6.125 inches. I have viewed the Lippert, MORryde and Dexter equalizers and cannot find a match dimensionally. Either the vertical rise is less than 4 inches or the horizontal spread is more that 6 inches 7.5 inches If I use the equalizer with the 7.5” horizontal length between spring bolt holes it will change the angle on the shackles to nearly straight up and down vs. the current angle. Would that be acceptable? Any suggestions on what equalizer to use without losing the 4” verticals rise? Thank you.

Hello George, thanks for reaching out. When replacing equalizers and shackles, it is critical that the replacement parts are identical in size to the stock components. There is a small amount of tolerance, like maybe 1/2" or less, but any difference more than this can throw the suspension off and cause things to go out of alignment. Also, the axle spacing is not the best thing to use for selecting an equalizer. The best way is to go strictly off the dimensions of the current equalizer. I will also add that a taller equalizer is not an effective way to raise the ride height of the trailer.

Since your equalizer is 6" long x 4" tall, the only option will be a direct replacement, part # TREQ310. There is unfortunately not an upgraded equalizer that will match these dimensions. The closest option is the Road Armor Shock Absorbing Equalizer Kit # LC696740. These equalizers are 6" long and 3-1/4" tall. The 3/4" difference is a bit beyond the acceptable tolerance, so I cannot guarantee that this will fit your trailer. The direct replacement # TREQ310 is definitely what I recommend.

You can still upgrade the shackles and bolts. For that I recommend one of the MORryde suspension upgrade kits since they come with HD shackles, bronze bushings and wet bolts. We just need to be sure the shackles are the same size as what you have now and for that I recommend the MORryde Suspension Upgrade Kit # MR46ZR which comes with 2-1/4" shackles. This will be a very nice upgrade for the stock suspension. With proper maintenance, the HD shackles will last the life of the trailer.

Feel free to reach out with any other questions.

Thank you, Jesse for your very thorough answer. I agree with you that installing an equalizer with different dimensions would alter the potential geometry of the axle alignment. I will take your suggestion and perform an upgrade to the shackles and wet bolts, and I plan to use the lift kit to attempt to level my trailer when connected to my truck. e trailer is the best place that has quality components and I will be ordering from you very soon. Again thank you Jesse.

@GeorgeK I am glad I could help! A lift kit or axle flip kit (over-under kit) are the best options for lifting the trailer. Come back anytime you need anything.
