Height Clearance Needed for Yakima MajorShady 270 Awning with Mounting Brackets Flipped Down

Updated 01/05/2026 | Published 09/08/2024

Question:

Do you have the dimensions of the bracket that comes with the Major Shady? Im planning on mounting the awning to my Yakima HD racks with the awning bracket in the lower position hanging down. I need to make sure the gullwing doors on my trucks canopy will clear the bracket and awning when in the closed position. I would like to know how far down the bracket will hang. To add onto that, Im interested in knowing the dimension of the back of the awning where it mounts to the bracket. See attached for a photo from your site that refers to the dimensions Im talking about. NOTE: Im assuming I can flip the bracket in the photo upside down to have awning sit lower. Please let me know if this is not the case.

Hey Scott, thanks for reaching out!

I don't have the dimensions of the mounting bracket that comes with the Yakima MajorShady 270 Awning # Y82AV, but when I reached out to my contact at Yakima for that info they said if you measure from the ground to the mounting location and then subtract 8-1/2" from the distance that will give you about the lowest point of the awning when the brackets are flipped like you're wanting to do.

The instructions do mention that flipping the brackets is completely safe to do so you'll be good going that route!

Hey Scott, how did things turn out with the flipped brackets on your Yakima MajorShady awning? Did the 8-1/2 inch clearance give your canopy doors enough room to open and close smoothly? Your update could make it easier for others planning a similar setup.
